Gold Krugerrand Coin
The Gold Krugerrand was first minted in South Africa in 1967. It holds a pioneering role in the world of bullion: unlike many other coins at the time, it was the very first gold coin to be sold for its market gold value, rather than a symbolic face value. Furthermore, the Krugerrand established the one-troy-ounce standard for pure gold content, which has since become the benchmark for investment coins worldwide.
Although the Krugerrand does not have a denomination stamped on it, it is considered legal tender in South Africa. This unique status created a legal loophole for some American citizens. Between 1933 and 1974, when U.S. law prohibited private ownership of gold bullion, Americans could legally own Krugerrands because they were classified as foreign currency.
The coin is minted from 22-karat gold, an alloy consisting of 91.67% pure gold. The remaining 8.33% is copper, which gives the Krugerrand its distinctive, rich orange-gold hue. This addition of copper not only enhances the coin's color but also makes it more durable and resistant to scratches and dents compared to pure 24-karat coins.
